MP: Resolution on Peacekeepers Binding for Government
The Parliament’s resolutions, including the one over the Russian peacekeepers, are binding for the government and a failure to implement them might become a reason for a vote of confidence, MP Levan Bezhashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Issues, told Civil Georgia on February 14.
“This [resolution on the Russian peacekeepers stationed in the conflict zone] is an ordinary normative act and the government will be obligated to act in accordance with this resolution,” MP Bezhashvili from the ruling National Movement party explained.
Discussions are currently underway to adopt a new resolution on the Russian peacekeepers on February 15, giving the executive authorities one month to develop a detailed plan on how the government plans to provide for the withdrawal of the withdrawal, or to act in accordance to the October 11, 2005 resolution, which says that the government should launch procedures for their withdrawal starting from February 15.
