Saakashvili Meets Parliamentary Majority Members
President Mikheil Saakashvili meets parliamentarians from the ruling National Movement party, who make up a majority in the Georgia?s legislative body, in the resort town of Borjomi on September 4.
This meeting between the parliamentary majority and the President comes amid controversy which has aroused in the party after the journalist detention scandal, which revealed alleged commercial wrongdoings by National Movement parliamentarian Koba Bekauri.
But MPs said after the meeting that the issue was not discussed at the meeting. ?We have not talked about it at all,? MP Giga Bokeria said.
However, the news agency InterPressNews reported that at the meeting President Saakashvili proposed to set up a special group which will monitor the activities of the parliamentarians in an attempt to prevent the violation of the law on conflict of interests, which bars officials from participating in various economic activities. If confirmed, the initiative can be regarded as a reaction to those allegations which surround MP Bekauri?s activities related with the customs terminal Opiza.
After the meeting President Saakashvili said that the country has ?consolidated, strong [parliamentary] majority, which is capable of building democracy.?
He stressed that the parliamentary faction of the ruling party ?is united? and follows the slogan: ?strength is in unity.?
?We have a precise vision. We know what we are doing and what should be done and in which direction we are moving,? Saakashvili said. He was speaking at the opening ceremony for a sculpture of Ilia Chavchavadze, a 19th century Georgian writer and public figure, in Borjomi.
