Saakashvili: ‘We Have Nothing to Hide’ over Zhvania’s Death

President Saakashvili said, while addressing parliamentarians on February 10, that the government has “noting to hide” regarding the circumstances surrounding Zurab Zhvania’s death.

President Saakashvili’s statement followed a request by opposition MP Davit Gamkrelidze, leader of the New Rights-Industrialists parliamentary faction, to set up a special investigative commission from the Parliament to independently probe into the Zhvania’s bizarre death.

“We have nothing to hide. Everything will be unveiled. I trust our law-enforcement agencies and I advice you [referring to Gamkrelidze] to trust them,” Saakashvili said, adding that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has been included in the investigation.

He said the government, by providing all necessary information, “will not let a person [referring again to Gamkrelidze, who was an outspoken critic of the late Prime Minister] who made his career by insulting Zurab Zhvania speak about it all the time.”

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said on February 10 that she does not deem it necessary to set a special parliamentary investigative commission to probe into the circumstances surrounding late Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania’s death, as was demanded by the New Rights-Industrialist opposition coalition at a parliamentary session on Thursday.
