Draft Tax Code Close to Finalization

Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania met with parliamentarians on October 25 to discuss the current draft of the new tax code. After the meeting, which lasted almost five hours, the parliamentarians said that the draft is almost finalized.

MP Roman Gotsiridze, who chairs the Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Budgetary Issues, told reporters that the meeting was “very fruitful” and both sides made significant compromises in order to achieve an agreement.

Most of the parliamentarians and economic experts complained about the increased rights of tax officials, who had right to probe companies several times in year. According to the new version, the tax officials will be able to probe firms only once in a year.

MPs say that controversy over certain issues still exits, but they will be discussed during the first and second hearing of the draft at the parliamentary sessions.

The Prime Minister will hold another meeting with the parliamentarians, particularly with the representatives of the parliamentary majority on October 27, before the draft is discussed at the parliamentary session, scheduled for October 28.
