“Kmara” for Educated Future Generation

On September 20, 2003 “Kmara” (Enough) activists organized charitable concert in Mziuri Park in Tbilisi “Enough for Educated Future Generation”. The action aimed to collect books for Tbilisi based school libraries.

“Kmara” activists, who currently are more than thousand across Georgia, became well known in spring this year for their radical anti-governmental actions in front of the State Chancellery demanding the government resignation and enough of silence. (“Students Say “Enough”). The movement became more popular during the rallies at Tbilisi State University, protesting the re-election of Roin Metreveli as the Rector of TSU for the third term (“Enough of Having the Same Rector for 11 years” ). 

Recently the movement changed its stance and focused on community and social issues and decided to arrange, as the “Kmara” activists say, “positive actions.” With the assistance of volunteers in September they have organized two cleaning actions on Mtatsminda plateau, aiming to clean the center of Tbilisi from the garbage. The concert in Mziuri Park was one more positive action organized by the “Kmara”.

“We need our future generation to be well educated in order to achieve the level of democracy and state development as we wish”- was the motto of “Kmara” activists gathered in Mziuri Park on Saturday. The organizers initiated the concert with some Georgian pop singers, where the price for the entrance was one book. The population was free to bring any kind of book for the Tbilisi school libraries.    

The concert was intensive and lively, attended by more than thousand Tbilisites from all age groups. “The idea of the action is wonderful. We the citizens can assist each other in becoming more educated, as without education the whole generations might be lost”- one of the elder participants of the concert told Advocacy.Ge.

The action helped to collect more than 600 various Georgian books. However “Kmara” activists gave the possibility for interested citizens to make their contribution even during the following week. Residents of Tbilisi brought more than hundred books to “Kmara” office during this week.

“Kmara” activists consider giving these books to several schools which recently have been transformed from Russian into Georgian schools and have the shortage of Georgian books in the library.

“We have not really chosen the school to contribute all these books yet, however the main mission is done” – Georgi Kandelaki of “Kmara” movement told Advocacy.Ge.

“We believe the more citizens will be involved in this kind of activity, the more the level of democracy will rise in Georgia” – he added.

The concert in Mziuri was also attended by leading CSO representatives and famous Georgian writers.

The organizers are considering continuing their activity even after the parliamentary election due on November 2, and arranging more interesting and positive actions.
