MCA Official Discusses Assistance Proposals in Georgia

The chief executive officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which administers the U.S. assistance program Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), arrived in Tbilisi on June 3 to discuss the development of the various assistance proposals submitted to the MCA assistance program.


In early May, the U.S. selected 16 countries, including Georgia, that were eligible for funding offered by the MCA.


The MCA chief executive officer has already met with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as well as with the Prime Minister, Zurab Zhvania.


?It is anticipated that Georgia will receive approximately 400 million USD over the 3 or 4 year time frame offered by the Millennium Challenge Account,? Georgian Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli told reporters on June 3rd.
 
The countries chosen were Armenia, Benin, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Georgia, Ghana, Honduras, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Senegal, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu.
 
MCA grants are awarded to governments, non-governmental organizations, and private organizations, which will implement programs that promote good governance, further economic reform and anti-corruption efforts, develope enterprises in the private sector, build the capacity for trade and investment, raise agricultural productivity and promote health and education.
