Votes in Adjara Boost Revival’s Hopes for Parliamentary Seats

With the 70% of votes counted Central Election Commission announced President Saakashvili’s National Movement-Democrats and two other parties could gain seats in the Parliament.

According to the partial results the ruling National Movement-Democrats received 65.6%; Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze’s Revival Union – 8,24% and the Rightist Opposition-Industrialist-New Rights – 7,18%.

Votes from Adjara’s six election districts also are included in these results. However, elections in one of the election districts in Adjara are disputed.

Chairman of the Central Election Commission Zurab Tchiaberashvili told a press conference that elections in Khulo district of Adjara were marred by violations. “I do not rule out that the results in this district will be canceled,” he added.

The Labor Party, which already demanded cancellation of election results because of alleged widespread ballot fraud, received 6,09%; Freedom – 4,53%; Unity – 2,49%; NDP-Traditionalists – 2,43%.
