Saakashvili Warned Abashidze

Georgian President’s representatives to Adjara, which were appointed by Mikheil Saakashvili to monitor operation of the Sarpi customs checkpoint and port of Batumi in the Autonomous Republic still failed to perform their duties.

“I was told that I will be able to start working after Mr. [Aslan] Abashidze [head of Adjarian Autonomy] approves our appointment. Now I am waiting for meeting with Abashidze,” Davit Akhalaia, Georgian Presidential representative to Adjarian customs service told reporters.

Aslan Abashidze demanded on March 21 to appoint the Autonomous Republic’s representatives to the port of Poti and Vale customs, which is Georgia’s another checkpoint at the Turkish border outside the Adjara Autonomous Republic.

However, President Saakashvili warned Adjarian authorities “if my representatives will not start working in Adjara within two days, I will re-impose economic sanctions on the region.”
