Venice Commission Studies Constitutional Changes in Georgia

The Council of Europe’s expert body on constitutional affairs, the European Commission for Democracy through Law, known as Venice Commission, will adopt an opinion on the recent changes to the Georgian constitution.

Council of Europe press division reported on March 10, that the issue will also be discussed with Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze during Venice Commission?s 58th plenary session in Venice this weekend.

Nino Burjanadze will leave for Venice on March 11.

The Parliament approved constitutional changes on February 6, altering Georgia?s political power arrangement in favor of the President.

Critics also say that the President?s power was increased at the expense of the legislative body, which might be dissolved by the President in case it fails to approve the state budget after three attempts.
