Authorities, Opposition Accuses Each Other of Fueling Tensions in Rustavi

The Interior Ministry of Georgia accused one of the opposition parties of deliberate aggravating the situation in a Georgian city of Rustavi on the day of the parliamentary elections in the country.

“The representatives of one of the opposition parties, who are dressed in policemen’s uniforms, will try to provoke clashes with voters, which will be followed by destabilization of situation in the city,” the statement issued by the Interior Ministry on November 1 reads. However, the Ministry’s statement does not say which opposition party intends to aggravate situation.

Supporters of the opposition National Movement party blocked today the Rustavi district election commission to hamper the distribution of ballot papers among the precincts. They demand postponement of November 2 parliamentary elections in Rustavi.

They demanded postponement of elections in the city due to the mess in voter lists.

The MP candidates in the Rustavi single-mandate constituency also demanded on October 31 to postpone the parliamentary elections in Rustavi due to mass inaccuracies in voter lists.

The opposition claims that that the authorities deployed illegal armed groups in Rustavi to trigger destabilization and thwart elections.
