Shevardnadze Reaffirms Concerns Over Russia’s Threats

President Shevardnadze voiced concern once again regarding the recent official statement from Moscow that Russia could launch pre-emptive strikes in case of a threat to its national security.

“The statement about preventive strikes poses a real danger,” Shevardnadze said in his Monday radiobroadcast on October 13.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said earlier this month that Russia would not rule out the preventive use of force if its interests demanded it.

Shevardnadze slammed Russian leadership for its threats of pre-emptive strikes and drew parallels between the Moscow’s new military doctrine and Adolf Hitler on October 10.

“Incidentally, I can recall some of Hitler’s utterances. He never said – we should conquer the whole of Europe. He said – let us help Austria, let us help Czechoslovakia, let us help Poland and so on,” Eduard Shevardnadze said on October 10.
