EU Deeply Concerned Over Attack on NGO

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 26, 2002) – Attack against the human rights advocacy NGO Liberty Institute, “as well as other incidents against non-governmental and religious organisations, undermines freedom of thought and religion in Georgia,” declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU says.

“The European Union calls on the Government of Georgia to respect its commitments as a member of the Council of Europe and the OSCE. Failure to improve the current security environment and consolidate the rule of law will negatively influence both the political and economic situation in Georgia.”

The European Union calls upon the Government of Georgia to ensure a rapid investigation into the incident, so as to bring to justice those responsible for the attack.

On July 25 district court of Tbilisi released Giorgi Doinjashvili, which was suspected in attack against the Liberty Institute, due to lack of evidences.
