Georgia Taking Measures to Protect Foreigners – Shevardnadze Says

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 22, 2002) – Special measures of security are taken to safeguard foreign citizens in Georgia, President Shevardnadze said at the news briefing on July 22.

Georgian President stated that the crimes committed against foreigners are not directed towards the particular person, it is against the country as well.

The US sponsored Georgia Train-and-Equip program considers training of one special-purpose unit of the internal troops, which will act against the criminal groups kidnapping citizens.

According to the Georgian Interior Ministry 37 crimes are committed against the foreigners in Georgia in the first half of 2002, most of them in Tbilisi, Georgian capital.
