Sukhumi Guarantees Safety of Foreign Tourists

(Tbilisi, August 13, 2003, Civil Georgia) – De Facto Prime Minister of Abkhazia, Raul Khajimba, said in an interview with the Russian TV channel NTV on August 11, that foreign tourists feel safe in Abkhazia.

“Despite the statements of Georgian authorities that the crime situation is grave in Abkhazia, Russian tourists feel safe here. Nothing threatens them in Abkhazia,” the de facto Prime Minister said.

In a statement issued on July 17, Georgia’s Embassy to Russia called on Russian citizens to avoid traveling in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia, because of the grave crime situa!
tion there.

The de facto Prime Minister also stressed that despite numerous protests by the Georgian side, both sea and railway links with Russia are operating. He added that this will promote the development of tourism in the region.

“We understand Georgia’s concern, but I would like to say that if we live better, this will be good for Georgia as well,” Khajimba added.
