President Against Electricity Tax Reduction

(Tbilisi. March 10, 2003. Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze said today that the reduction of the electricity tax was ?untimely.?

?Some of the political parties try to gain popular support on the eve of the Parliamentary elections with raising issues like this [electricity tax],? Eduard Shevardnadze said.

The National Commission of Electricity Regulation reduced the electricity tax after the Constitutional Court of Georgia ruled positively on Georgian Labor Party appeal to reduce electricity tax.

The mission of the International Monetary Fund, which paid visit to Georgia in late February and early March, also expressed concern regarding the reduction of the electricity tax. The mission stated ?decision would worsen fiscal pressures.?
