U.S. Reiterates ‘Strong Support’ to Georgia

U.S. Department of State reiterated that Washington "strongly supports" Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and urged Russia to fulfill its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement.

“The United States, of course – as we always say – strongly support Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We would specifically urge Russia to fulfill all of its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of its forces to pre-conflict positions and free access for humanitarian assistance to the territories,” Deputy Spokesman for the U.S. Department of State, Mark C. Toner, said at a press briefing in Washington on August 8 after he was asked to comment on the issue as the date marked three-year anniversary of the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.

“And we urge all parties to continue to constructively engage via the Geneva discussions and the incident response and prevention mechanisms. We believe both those venues and mechanisms will help promote greater stability in the region,” he said.

Mark Toner also stressed “the valuable” role of the European Union Monitoring Mission in maintaining stability and said: “We regret that the EU Monitoring Mission doesn’t have access to both sides of the administrative boundary lines.”
