U.S. on Russian Officials’ Visits to Sokhumi, Tskhinvali

Russia’s efforts to conclude “formal state-to-state agreements with the ‘de facto’ authorities in Abkhazia and South Ossetia” during its officials’ visit “to those separatist regions are inconsistent” with the principle of Georgia’s territorial integrity, the U.S. Department of State said on April 30.

The press statement was apparently made in reference to the visit of Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, who was in Tskhinvali and Sokhumi on April 25-26; the statement, however, makes no mentioning of the Russian Foreign Minister and instead is referring only to unspecified “Russian officials.”

“The United States remains committed to a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Georgia’s separatist regions and the restoration of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We further call upon all parties to the conflict to fully implement their commitments pursuant to the 2008 Ceasefire Agreement,” the press statement reads.
