EU ‘Deeply Concerned’ over Russia’s Border Treaties with Sokhumi, Tskhinvali

The Czech EU presidency said on April 30 it was “deeply concerned” over Russia’s border protection treaties “the Georgian separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

It said in a statement that the move was “in contradiction with the six point agreement of August 12, 2008.”

“The Presidency of the EU recalls the EU’s full support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia in its internationally recognized borders,” the statement says. “The Presidency remains committed and is ready to support every effort with a view to a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict in Georgia. Security matters should be discussed in relevant international fora, in particular the Geneva discussions, the next session of which will take place on 18-19 May 2009.”
