Tbilisi Slams Moscow’s Stance on Abkhaz Polls
In a statement issued March 7 the Georgian Foreign Ministry said that by assessing the March 4 parliamentary elections in breakaway Abkhazia as ?a continuation of democratic trends?, the opinion of the Russian Federation is again at odds with that of the international community.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on March 6 that it ?respects? the polls in Abkhazia, while the European Union, NATO, OSCE, the Council of Europe and the U.S strongly rejected these elections as illegitimate.
?It is completely beyond understanding to speak about any ‘continuation of democratic tendencies’ by the regime that masterminded ethnic cleansing,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
Official Tbilisi claims that the election process and informational support was guided by ?experts? assigned from Moscow.
?Also beyond criticism is the reference to reports of a group of ‘observers’ comprising, to say the least, odious and politically biased representatives of the separatist regime and the Russian Federation,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry called on Moscow to perform its role as mediator and facilitate the resumption of negotiations, which have reached a deadlock.
