Georgia Sets up ‘NATO-Standard’ Military Base in Senaki

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili attended the ceremony of opening a new military unit in the western Georgian town of Senaki on November 19.


?For the first time in history, we open the most modern military unit in Samegrelo [region]. Until now, the military units were basically located in eastern Georgia and few in Kutaisi [western Georgian city]. This is the first military unit, which is equipped in accordance with NATO standards. The servicemen will have all necessary conditions for their service,? Saakashvili said at the opening ceremony.


Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili, who also attended the opening ceremony, said that the construction of the modern military unit cost approximately USD 11 million.


The new military base is meant for approximately 3 thousand servicemen.
