Georgian MFA Protests Moscow’s Stance over South Ossetia
The Georgian Foreign Ministry expressed protest regarding the statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 3, in which Moscow accused the Georgian side of carrying out a mortar attack on the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali on September 20 and slammed the Georgian Parliament?s plan to consider a resolution against the Russian peacekeepers as ?a provocation.?
?A range of provisions in the above-mentioned statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry drastically contradicts the position confirmed by the Supreme Authorities of Russia concerning support for Georgia?s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and can be appraised as a gross violation of the universally acknowledged norms and principles of international law, as well as bilateral and multilateral commitments,? the statement, issued by the Georgian Foreign Ministry on October 4, reads.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry also protests the fact that ?the statement refers to the leader of the separatist regime Eduard Kokoity as President, over which the Georgian side has repeatedly expressed its protest.?
The Georgian Foreign Ministry demands that the Russian Foreign Ministry state its official position regarding this issue, ?which will allow the Georgian side to determine the expediency of further fulfillment of the role of mediator in the conflict settlement process by the Russian Federation.?
