Reports: TAM to Modernize Bulgaria’s SU-25 Jets

Russian news agencies RIA Novosti and Interfax reported on September 3 that Georgia will soon launch the modernization of about twenty Su-25 Frogfoot jets for the Bulgarian armed forces.

The Russian news agencies quoted an unnamed source in the Georgian Defense Ministry, who says that the Su-25 jets will be modernized in the Tbilisi aircraft factory TbilAviaMsheni (TAM). The source also said that the TAM signed a contract with the Bulgarian side last year.

But the Georgian side has strongly denied this report. ?There is no such contract. This [information] is not true,? Pantiko Tordia, the Director-General of TAM, told Civil Georgia on September 3.

TAM, which has an ISO 9001 Quality Management Certificate, recognizing the high quality of its products, produces four modifications of the Su 25 battle support aircraft. The most modern modification is the Su 25 ?Scorpio,? designed in cooperation with Israeli Elbit Systems company.

?Currently, SU-25 jets are being disassembled and later they will be delivered to Georgia by sea and air transport,? RIA Novosti and Interfax quoted an unknown source in the Georgian Defense Ministry as saying.

According to this report these fighter jets are currently stationed in Bezmer airfield, near the town of Yambol in south eastern Bulgaria.
