Saakashvili: Bush’s Statement is a ‘New Political Reality’ for Georgia
In a statement issued on February 22 Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili hailed U.S. President George W. Bush’s address to the European leaders in Brussels wherein the latter called for more assistance to Georgia and Ukraine, the Georgian President’s spokesperson Alana Gagloeva said on Tuesday.
“Making special emphasis on Georgia and Ukraine in the context of relations with the European Union and NATO creates a new foreign political reality for Georgia,” the Georgian President’s statement reads.
According to Gagloeva, President Saakashvili expects that Georgia will be discussed during a forthcoming meeting between the Russian and U.S. Presidents, scheduled for February 24 in Bratislava.
“As a free government takes hold in that country [Ukraine], and as the government of President [Viktor] Yushchenko pursues vital reforms, Ukraine should be welcomed by the Europe Atlantic family,” U.S. President George W. Bush said on February 21.
“We must support new democracies, so members of our alliance must continue to reach out to Georgia, for last year, a peaceful protest overturned a stolen election and unleashed the forces of democratic change,” he added.
