Court Rejected Chechens’ Appeal to Suspend Extradition

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 6, 2002) – On December 5 Mtatsminda-Krtsanisi district court of Tbilisi refused three Chechen militant suspects’ appeal to annul decision of the Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office on their extradition to Russia.

Alleged Chechen militants claimed that the process of determination of their identities was not completed yet, thus the extradition is illegal.

Chechens can appeal the Tbilisi District Court within the 10 days to demand cancellation of the Mtatsminda-Krtsanisi court’s decision.

These three Chechens were detained by the Georgian border guards together with other 10 armed persons on August 3-5. Georgian Security Ministry charged them for illegal crossing the border and carrying the arms and explosives.

Georgia has already extradited to Russia 5 of them. On November 28 Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office announced that other three Chechens would be handed over to Russia as well.
