Zhvania won’t run for Prime-Minister

Parliamentary Chairman Zurab Zhvania announced today that he won’t run for the Prime-Minister’s position if the cabinet of ministers is re-introduced. The announcement came after President Shevardnadze’s resignation from the Chairmanship of the Citizens Union of Georgia.

“Interests of the party should take precedence over private ambitions,” Zhvania stated in explanation of his decision.

Georgian political scene has been dominated by the discussion on re-introduction of the cabinet of ministers since Spring 2001. Zhvania was commonly regarded to be the candidate to be endorsed by the President. Current decision confirms analysts’ prognosis that Shevardnadze’s resignation from party position will lead to serious reshuffle of the political forces.
