Vote Results Among Georgian Troops in Afghanistan
GDDG ruling party received 614 votes, followed by the UNM opposition party with 297 votes among those Georgian service members, who were deployed in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led mission.
Free Democrats, led by ex-defense minister Irakli Alasania, received 221 votes; Labor Party – 49 votes; Paata Burchuladze’s State for People – 28 votes; Republican Party, whose one of the leaders Tina Khidasheli was defense minister till late July – 7 votes; Nino Burjanadze’s Democratic Movement – 5 votes, and Alliance of Patriots – 4 votes; For Georgia’s Peace, party led by Davit Tevzadze who was the defense minister in 1998-2004 – 1 vote.
Early voting for the Georgian troops in Afghanistan was held on October 5, three days before the parliamentary elections. But their votes were counted only after polling stations in Georgia were closed on October 8.
Slightly over 1,600 voters were eligible to cast ballot in early vote in Afghanistan. Normally number of Georgian troops in Afghanistan stands at about 860. Increased number of Georgian voters in Afghanistan at the time of early voting was attributed to the fact that the it coincided with the rotation of Georgian troops in Afghanistan.
