Groundbreaking Ceremony for Combined-Cycle Power Plant in Gardabani

A groundbreaking ceremony for construction of 230 MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant with an estimated cost of USD 220 million was held in Gardabani on January 17 – the project, which the Georgian government said would “further strengthen country’s energy independence.”

The state-owned JSC Partnership Fund and its Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC) are funding the construction of the plant, expected to be completed before the end of 2015. Çalık Enerji, which is part of Turkey’s Çalık Holding, is a contractor implementing the project.

Originally the contract over the planned plant was signed between Çalık Enerji and the Georgian government in August, 2012, based on turnkey principle, involving construction and commissioning of the plant. Initial cost of the project was USD 200 million and was scheduled to be completed by September, 2014.
