Former Senior Police Official Arrested Again
Former head of Interior Ministry’s internal investigations unit, Tengiz Gunava, was arrested on November 29, less than two weeks after court released him on bail in connection to a separate case.
Chief prosecutor’s office said that Gunava was arrested after questioning in connection to two separate cases of misappropriation; in one case prosecutor’s office accuses Gunava of embezzling 3,000 liters of gasoline and GEL 49,500 when he served as the Interior Ministry’s internal investigations unit in 2012.
Gunava’s lawyer, Malkhaz Velijanashvili, said these “are completely absurd allegations”.
Gunava, who was chief of police in western region of Samegrelo before becoming head of the ministry’s internal investigations unit, was first arrested about two weeks ago on charges related to illegal possession of arms and drugs. Gunava, who was released on GEL 10,000 bail, said charges against him were “fabricated” and a handgun and drugs “planted”; after his appeal the prosecutor’s office launched a probe into his allegation about “fabricated” charges against him.
