Moscow Slams Tbilisi Over Prison Abuse Case
Cases of torture in the Gldani prison No.8 in Tbilisi question the Georgian authorities’ ability to protest the rights of its citizens, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on September 24.
“We are following the dramatic development of the situation in Georgia in connection with the revealed cases of gross violation of prisoners’ rights in this country with concern,” Konstantin Dolgov, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s special representative for human rights, democracy and rule of law, said in his comments posted by the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website.
“The shocking footage of torture in the Gldani prison number 8… once again makes one wonder about the real capability of the Georgian authorities to guarantee the observance of human rights and to secure the rule of law," Dolgov said, adding that the case also questions Georgia’s capability to adhere international anti-torture conventions.
He expressed hope that “thorough and unbiased” investigation would follow.
“We also hope that the UN committee against torture and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment will give appropriate assessment,” Dolgov said.
