Georgian Dream Targets at Least 50 Majoritarian MP Seats
Georgian Dream opposition coalition’s minimum target is to win at least 50 out of 73 majoritarian MP seats in the October 1 parliamentary elections, leader of the coalition, Bidzina Ivanishvili said.
“We should win these elections with majoritarian [contest]. We should definitely endorse [in the new Parliament] no less than 50 majoritarian MP candidates – that’s the minimum we plan and there is a very high probability of it,” Ivanishvili told supporters at a campaign meeting in the village of Kakabeti in eastern region of Kakheti on August 31.
Georgian Dream has nominated majoritarian candidates in all 73 single-mandate constituencies.
Georgia has a mixed system in which 73 lawmakers out of 150 will be elected in 73 single-mandate constituencies and rest 77 seats will be allocated proportionally under the party-list contest among political parties and election blocs, which clear 5% threshold.
Ivanishvili again called on supporters not to differentiate between supporting Georgian Dream in party-list and majoritarian contests when casting ballot – something he has been repeating at almost every campaign meeting for a week already.
He said that in some cases the ruling United National Movement party had selected “interested” majoritarian MP candidates and for that reason “often voters are confused”, thinking to support the Georgian Dream in party-list contest, but a ruling party candidate in majoritarian contest. Ivanishvili told supporters in the Kakabeti village that a majoritarian MP candidate, nominated by the ruling party, should not be viewed separately from UNM.
