Putin Congratulates Georgian People on Victory Day

In a message congratulating the 67th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin wished the Georgian people “peace and prosperity.”

Putin sent similar messages of congratulation to the member states of Commonwealth of Independent States, which were addressed to the Presidents of those countries. In case of Georgia, the message is addressed to “the Georgian people.”

Putin says in the message: “We will always stand up for truth about the war, decisively eradicate any attempt to distort or rewrite the history.”

“Unprecedented heroism showed in severe years of war will further serve as a moral guide for young generations, [serve as] a firm foundation for maintaining and multiplying tradition of Russian-Georgian friendship and good neighborly [relations],” the message reads.

Putin also sent separate messages of congratulations to leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgia’s two breakaway regions, which Russia recognized as independent states after the August, 2008 war.
