Civil Society Groups Thank EU, U.S. for Georgia Support

In a joint address to the U.S. embassy in Tbilisi a broad range of Georgian civil society organizations expressed on May 20 gratitude for "the outstanding support" the U.S. has been offering to Georgia through the promotion of the democratic reforms.

The address comes just few days after the opposition Georgian Party held a protest rally outside the U.S. embassy in Tbilisi.

"Let us reiterate the importance of the United States Government’s further engagement in the promotion of consolidated democracy in the county thought strengthening civic society, rule of law, human rights protection practice, independent media, Trade Unions Rights and civic education," reads the joint address by about three dozen of civil society groups.

The same groups made a separate address on May 20 to the European Union also expressing gratitude towards the EU’s support to Georgia.

"We are hopeful that European Union will more explicitly and directly encourage Georgian Government to meet its obligations assumed under the format of Neighborhood Policy and Eastern Partnership and strengthen the participatory and monitoring mechanism of the civil society of Georgia in these processes," the address reads.
