EU Special Envoy Visits Sokhumi
Peter Semneby, EU’s special representative for South Caucasus, met with Abkhaz leader, Sergey Bagapsh and prime minister of breakaway region, Sergey Shamba, in Sokhumi on July 14.
Abkhaz news agency, Apsnipress, reported quoting Bagapsh that Sokhumi “is not demanding recognition” from EU, which has non-recognition and engagement policy towards Georgia’s breakaway regions. Bagapsh said that Sokhumi “understands the situation and [EU’s] stance towards us.”
“But we are open for a dialogue; we need to move forward,” Bagapsh said.
He also reiterated Sokhumi’s position over Georgia’s State Strategy on Occupied Territories and said that it was “a document of internal use for the Georgian bureaucrats.”
“There is nothing real in [the document] and neither Abkhazia nor South Ossetia will be part of it,” Bagapsh said.
