Nicaraguan FM Visits Tskhinvali, Sokhumi

Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez, whose country recognized Georgia’s two breakaway regions, is visiting Tskhinvali and Sokhumi.

In Tskhinvali he signed an agreement with breakaway South Ossetia on diplomatic relations on April 14. He will also travel to breakaway Abkhazia and meet with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh and foreign minister Maxim Gvinjia.

Nicaragua was the first country after Russia to recognize independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in September, 2008.

Tbilisi responded with cutting diplomatic ties with Nicaragua. Georgia’s ties with Nicaragua were only nominal since establishing formal diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1994.
