CoE Human Rights Chief to Visit Georgia

Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe’s commissioner for human rights, will arrive in Georgia on November 27 for a week-long visit, the CoE Commissioner’s website reported.

Along with other issues, the CoE Commissioner will apparently discuss the issue of release of four Georgian teenagers held in Tskhinvali since November 4.

Last week Georgian lawmakers from the ruling party criticized Thomas Hammarberg for “being inactive” in respect of four Georgian teenagers. MP Akaki Minashvili said that in all those cases, which regard Russia, “this person always prefers to take abstaining position.”

Parliamentary Chairman David Bakradze said on November 20 that Thomas Hammarberg’s "inaction triggers negative assessments."
