Moscow Wants Tbilisi to Sign Non-Use of Force Treaties with Tskhinvali, Sokhumi

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on August 6, that one year after “the Saakashvili regime’s cowardly and inhuman attack” on Tskhinvali, Georgia’s “policy of revenge” still remained one of the major challenges and threats.

In a lengthy statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry again justifies its recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and deployment of troops in these regions by the need to protect them from reoccurrence of the last August’s “Georgia’s aggression.”

In the statement it called on Tbilisi to sign a non-use of force treaties with its “neighboring states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia”

“Only through it can Tbilisi restore its minimal confidence among its neighboring states and international community,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Georgia said for number of times that such agreement could only be signed between Russia and Georgia under the condition if such agreement also envisages “de-occupation” of Georgia’s two breakaway regions.

Meanwhile, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that with the approach of the August war anniversary, Russia “unleashed with enhanced vigour” its “disinformation campaign.”

“The propaganda overstepping all forms of accepted boundaries and providing a mixture of distorted facts, demagoguery and blatant lies is aimed at justifying Russia’s aggressive and totally unlawful actions in the eyes of the international community and discredit the Georgian side,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on August 5.

“Russia’s provocative statements indicate also the intense degree of Russia’s discontent over the international community’s consolidated support for Georgia, its territorial integrity and sovereignty,” it added.
