EU Statement on Medvedev’s S.Ossetia Trip
EU said on July 16 it considered Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to breakaway South Ossetia as “incompatible with the principle of territorial integrity and is concerned about its effects on the international efforts to stabilise the region.”
“The EU notes that the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, has paid a visit to the Georgian region of South Ossetia without the prior consent of the Government of Georgia,” the statement reads. “The EU reiterates its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Medvedev made a previously unannounced visit to the breakaway region and met with South Ossetian leader, Eduard Kokoity, on July 13.
