Opposition to Scrap ‘Town of Cells’
Salome Zourabichvili, leader of the opposition Georgia’s Way party, said that the opposition had decided to remove improvised prison cells from Rustaveli Avenue, more than three months after a group of opposition parties launched “town of cells” as part of its drive to force President Saakashvili to resign.
“The decision has already been made to remove ‘cells’ because they have exhausted their time, it’s obvious,” Zourabichvili told Imedi TV’s program, Chronicle of the Day, on July 13. “But we will remove them against the background of a mass rally to show U.S. Vice President [Joe Biden] where the people stands, where the democratic society of Georgia stands.”
The U.S. Vice President will visit Georgia and Ukraine on July 20-24, according to the White House. Exact dates for Georgia visit have yet to be announced.
Mocked up prison cells were installed at number of venues in Tbilisi, but they now only remain in front of the Parliament on the Rustaveli Avenue.
