Republican Party Official Arrested

Merab Katamadze of the opposition Republican Party, part of Alliance for Georgia, was arrested by the police in Tbilisi over arms-related charges on June 27.

The Tbilisi City Court ordered to release Katamadze on GEL 5,000 bail on June 28.

Katamadze, a director of Azri publishing company and a member of the Republican Party’s political council, the party’s main decision-making body, is the highest ranking official among those eight Republican Party activists who have been held by the police in recent weeks. Most of them have been arrested over charges related with illegal possession of arms.

Number of activists from other opposition parties has also been arrested in recent weeks mainly on charges related with illegal possession of arms.
