Labor Party Says its Leader to Run for Presidency
The opposition Labor Party said on March 4, that its leader, Shalva Natelashvili, will run for presidency in case of early elections.
Natelashvili ran in January 5, 2008 early presidential elections and garnered 6.55% of votes.
About dozen of opposition parties are calling for President Saakashvili’s resignation and holding of early presidential elections. The authorities have said repeatedly that the demand was inappropriate and no early elections would be held.
Alliance for Georgia – a group including opposition New Rights and Republican parties, as well as Irakli Alasania’s political team – announced that it would nominate Alasania as its presidential candidate in case of early elections.
Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentary speaker and leader of opposition Democratic Movement–United Georgia party, said last month that it “should not be a surprise” if she had an ambition of running for presidency.
