Saakashvili on Russia-Ukraine Gas Dispute
President Saakashvili blamed Europe’s policy of “turning a blind eye” on Russia’s assertiveness for the current gas dispute between Ukraine and Russia, which led to cutting of gas supplies to Europe.
“As the Ukrainian case has demonstrated no one in Europe is secured from geopolitical risks. In summer it was Georgia, which was a victim of Russia’s aggression and now it is the entire eastern and central Europe. Just take a look and see people are dying of cold in Belgrade, Sofia, Kiev and in many other European cities. That is the result of a policy of turning a blind eye which was pursued for many years,” Saakashvili said at a government meeting on January 9.
The Georgian President also said that Putin was wrongly claiming that Russia was supplying Georgia with gas.
“We are not receiving anything from Russia,” he said and added that Georgia secured reliable gas supplies after signing a five-year agreement with Azerbaijan.
The Russian PM said on January 8, that despite political problems with Georgia, Russia was still delivering gas to Georgia.
