Saakashvili Says Tbilisi Wants Action Plan from NATO

President Saakashvili, who was in Munich on November 20, said Georgia wanted NATO to offer his country an action plan that would lead to membership, Deutsche Welle reported.

“Not offering Georgia a plan of action leading to membership will send the wrong signal to the wrong people,” Deutsche Welle reported quoting Saakashvili, who met with premier of Bavaria, Horst Seehofer, and opened an honorary Georgian consulate in Munich.

Georgian Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili and Georgia’s UN envoy, Irakli Alasania, have acknowledged recently that Georgia’s NATO integration process might take longer after the August war, which they said has damaged the country’s military and security infrastructure.

Reuters reported on November 17 Washington feared that formal NATO Membership Action Plan status for Georgia was probably impossible in December, when NATO foreign ministers are scheduled to meet and discuss the matter. But Washington hopes that some elements could be repackaged under another name, Reuters reported.

"People are looking for ways to do that," the agency reported quoting unnamed senior U.S. official.
