Russian Forces Start Removing Checkpoints

Russia started dismantling some of its checkpoints outside Abkhazia and South Ossetia, media sources reported early on October 5.

Russian and Georgian officials, as well as the EU monitoring mission, have also confirmed that the process started.

In accordance with the ceasefire deal, Russia is committed to the removal of all its checkpoints and the withdrawal of troops from areas outside breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia by October 10.

According to the EU monitoring mission, the Russian forces have dismantled a checkpoint in the village of Ali, northwest of Gori, AFP reported.

Signs of withdrawal were observed in several villages located along the Abkhaz administrative border, namely Urta, Ganmukhuri, Kveda Chkhorotsku and Kanti, Georgian media sources reported. Preparations for a troop pull-out were also seen in the Sachkhere district, to the west of breakaway South Ossetia.
