Politicians Comment on Burjanadze’s Questions
The ruling party has called on Nino Burjanadze, former parliamentary chairperson, to put questions about the August events in frames of the temporary parliamentary commission, while the opposition politicians reminded her of a share of responsibility for the current situation in the country.
“We call on everybody, who is interested and who have questions or opinions to come and cooperate with the commission,” Parliamentary Chairman Davit Bakradze told Rustavi 2 TV on October 2. “The only way to ascertain the truth passes through cooperation.”
On October 1 Nino Burjanadze said she had 43 questions on which she wanted answers from the authorities over the August war with Russia.
“It is regretful that this relationship has moved to an epistolary genre,” MP Pavle Kublashvili, the chairman of the parliamentary committee for legal issues, said. “Mrs. Burjanadze, as well as other persons, can come to the commission session and get answers to any questions.”
Mamuka Katsitadze of the opposition New Rights Party, said that it was absolutely legitimate to ask questions about the August events.
“But I would say one thing – it would be better if Mrs. Burjanadze, Mr. Nogaideli [former prime minister], Mr. Kitsmarishvili [former Georgian ambassador to Russia] and others had started putting questions to these authorities a bit earlier – at least six months ago. Probably we would have avoided this disaster,” he said.
Kakha Kukava of the Conservatives Party said that Nino Burjanadze was also responsible for the government’s actions.
“I have not forgotten either November 7 or January 5, for which these people are responsible too,” he told Rustavi 2 TV.
He said that the process of distancing famous figures from the authorities is still underway, “until only Akhalaia [a former Interior Ministry official], Merabishvili [Interior Minister], Bokeria [Deputy Foreign Minister] and several more persons remain around Saakashvili.”
“It is no secret that the backstage overnight meetings are often attended by Gela Bezhuashvili [chairman of the intelligence service] and Gia Baramidze [state minister for Euro-Integration issues],” Kukava said.
Gia Baramidze has described this statement as “unserious.”
