Russian MFA: Saakashvili Poses Threat to Peace
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on September 26 that President Saakashvili had failed to learn the lesson from the August events and “still poses a threat to peace and stability in the region.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry remarks were in response to an article by President Saakashvili in the Washington Post on September 23.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Saakashvili “is lying,” when he says that he hadn’t started the war, “as if Russia had attacked Georgia.”
“Saakashvili will never have enough courage to admit that he launched a criminal war, as a result of which he finally destroyed his own country by his own hands,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
It also said that Saakashvili had said nothing “distinct” about the fundamental commitment undertaken by Tbilisi in the six-point ceasefire agreement not to use force against Abkhazia or South Ossetia.
“For Saakashvili it is quite usual not to meet commitments. From this point of view, the Russian side has quite a gloomy experience of having relations with him,” the statement reads.
The Ministry also called on the European Union, which has agreed to deploy military observers in Georgia, to ensure that Georgia does not launch hostilities.
“We hope that the European Union, which pledged to guarantee the non-use of force principle, will take into account Saakashvili’s habit of breaking promises,” the statement said.
