Saakashvili Speaks of Georgia’s Increased Profile

President Saakashvili said at a meeting with the Georgian diaspora in New York that the August war had significantly increased Georgia’s international profile and had cast light on “what is happening around Georgia.”

“How can one be happy about the war, but – although Russia may temporarily take control over some more villages – this war has brought the main thing to Georgia – it has cast light over what is happening around Georgia,” Saakashvili said.

“Georgia has never enjoyed either such interest or such support,” he continued. “Now, each of you can say that my country is famous. I am walking in the streets and I see for myself that numerous people are shaking hands with me… I felt the great support Georgia has among ordinary citizens.”

He said that now everything depends on “how we will maintain unity, international support, how we will strengthen and finally the victory will be on our side.”

President Saakashvili met with the Georgian diaspora living in the United States after addressing the UN General Assembly on September 23.

In his first international visit since the August hostilities, President Saakashvili also held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
