Medvedev Vows to Restore Normal Ties with Georgian People

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia would do its best to restore normal ties with the Georgian people, with whom “Russia had brotherly relations for centuries.”   

“The Georgian people are not guilty of aggression and genocide, but rather that criminal and irresponsible regime that unleashed this war,” Medvedev said at a meeting with civil society organizations on September 19.

He also said that over one million Georgians live in Russia, who “took with understanding those actions, which the Russian Federation was forced to take.” 
 
“Of course, any propaganda, including that accompanying the military campaign of the Georgian regime, plays a negative role, but we believe in the good sense of the Georgian people and we will do our best to restore normal relations.”

He stressed that recent events had not resulted in xenophobia in Russia, and “this is very important.”
