Sarkozy Meets Medvedev over Georgia

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is meeting with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, in Moscow.

Just before the talks started, the two presidents made brief statements for the press.

“A rather tense month has passed,” Medvedev told his French counterpart. “All necessary efforts have been made for a settlement under the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan. Other important events have also taken place. The Russian Federation has recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. There are new approaches on how we should proceed under the [six-point Sarkozy-Medvedev] plan, which was approved. I think that we will discuss all these issues.”

Sarkozy said, as translated into Russian, that the agreement should be fulfilled.

“We represent here the hopes of 27 [EU member] states; and what do these countries want from Russia? They want peace, they want confidence and they want to have good relations,” the French president added.

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana are accompanying the French president.

The delegation is expected to arrive in Tbilisi and hold talks with the Georgian leadership on Monday evening.
