Norwegian MFA donates 10 million NOK to NRC

Norwegian Refugee Council

Secretary General Elisabeth Rasmusson is very happy that the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is supporting NRC’s work in Georgia.

Tuesday it was annouced that Norway will donate 30 million Norwegian crowns (NOK) to humanitarian assistance for the victims of the violence in Georgia. 10 million NOK of this funding will go to NRC.

The money will be spent on distribution of food and non-food items like blankets, bed sheets, cooking utensils and shelter.

"An important part of our work will be to build temporary shelters and help reconstruct destroyed homes," Rasmusson says.

According to UNHCR, approximately 80 000 people have been forced to flee their homes since the violence started. It remains unclear how many of these people will become long-term displaced, but the number of IDPs in Tbilisi alone tripled on Wednesday.

"We are very grateful that the Norwegian MFA contributes and we hope for their continued support should the needs in Georgia continue to increase," Rasmusson says.
