Two Draft Constitutional Amendments Initiated
Two draft constitutional amendments have been initiated in Parliament and two parliamentary commissions have been set up to lead one-month public discussions required before the approval of the proposals.
The first draft constitutional amendment envisages the reduction of the minimum number of lawmakers necessary for setting up a parliamentary faction from the current seven to six. It follows an agreement between the ruling party and the Christian-Democratic Party.
MP Pavle Kublashvili, the chairman of the parliamentary committee for legal issues, said the minimum number required may eventually be even less than six.
The second constitutional amendment concerns the merger of the Justice Ministry and the General Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the constitutional amendment, the General Prosecutor’s Office will merge with the Justice Ministry and the justice minister will simultaneously become the chief prosecutor.
The General Prosecutor’s Office was part of the judicial system, but was given separate status in 2004 following a constitutional amendment.
